Our History

qualifications

McKnight Smith Ward Griffin Engineers, Incorporated provides Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Suppression and Electrical engineering services specializing in design and consultation.

In collaboration with architects, owners, and developers, we have been planning and executing engineering designs for fifty years for clients in the residential, corporate, commercial, institutional, governmental, industrial, health care, religious, athletic, educational, and entertainment fields. Our services include design, consulting, energy analysis, evaluation of maintenance and operating costs, assistance in bid negotiations, construction administration, preparation of specifications, and contract documents. Many of our projects are government owned facilities, part of an existing campus context, and many of the buildings were occupied or semi-occupied during the hours of construction. We produce quality designs within scheduled time frames and budgets. Our engineers with our staff of interns, designers, and draftsmen are successful in meeting our goals of satisfying project objectives by placing continued emphasis on designs that fulfill the owner’s criteria in keeping with current construction materials and practices, federal and state laws, regulations, codes, and permits. Our standard of practice always includes sensitivity towards providing cost effective, energy efficient, and sustainable solutions to each design opportunity.

Our project managers provide overall project coordination and design supervision. We provide a team approach to all projects and our management style dictates at least two engineers be involved to expedite a project’s design, assure its quality, and to make certain it receives the required time to be completed successfully. Our project managers maintain “hands on” throughout the life of a project and facilitate reviews as a system of checks and balances against the design. Throughout the entire process of design, reviews, and construction, they involve the Owner, or Owner’s representative, any consultant that is involved with the project, and all members of our in-house project team. We meet weekly with our interns, construction observer, designers, and draftsmen to review project schedules, project progression status, allocation of human resources, and to schedule all activities and travel. This framework allows us to be sufficiently informed to back each other up, to be on job sites at all necessary times, and to be available to our clients and office personnel as needs arise.

Among our six professional engineers, the average length of employment with our company is sixteen years, which we believe is representative of our company’s stability and continuity of service to our clients. Our professional engineers are leaders in the engineering profession and are active in the National Society of Professional Engineers, Professional Engineers of North Carolina, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Our interns, designers, technicians, and support staff take full advantage of our company’s continuing education plan keeping current with information and requirements applicable to our engineering disciplines. In 1990, for recognition of our record and improvement of the engineering profession through our development of new designs and engineering practices in accordance with professional standards, we were awarded the NSPE Professional Development Award.
